Professor Lawrence McMahon is Director of the Department of Renal Medicine and Obstetric Medicine, Professor of Nephrology at Monash University, and Director of Advanced Training (Nephrology) for Victoria and Tasmania.

Before his appointment at Eastern Health, Prof McMahon was Director of Nephrology at Western Health and Physician in Charge of Dialysis at the Royal Melbourne Hospital. These posts followed a 2-year post-doctoral fellowship in Oxford, England.

He is and has been a member of various editorial boards and committees, including Chair of the Victorian Renal Health Clinical Network Dialysis Sub-Committee, and a member of the Renal Health Clinical Network Leadership Group. He has also been an associate editor of Nephrology, Dialysis and Transplantation, and is an editorial board member for the Journal of Clinical Medicine.

Prof McMahon regularly reviews manuscripts for leading international journals, including Nature and The Lancet. He is involved in numerous international and national research studies.

He maintains an active interest in teaching (primarily through his role as Senior National Examiner for the Royal Australasian College of Physicians), is State Coordinator for Nephrology Advanced Training for Victoria and Tasmania, and continues to enjoy clinical medicine and clinical and laboratory-based research. He also runs a translational research laboratory at Eastern Health Clinical School, Monash University, and has over 150 peer-reviewed publications.
