Biography
A/Prof Katharine (Kate) Scrivener is a researcher, clinician, and educator specialising in neurological physiotherapy, with a particular focus on stroke rehabilitation. Her work is driven by a commitment to improving walking recovery and mobility outcomes for individuals post-stroke. Drawing on extensive clinical experience across both public and private healthcare settings, Kate is passionate about supporting clinicians to stay informed of the latest evidence and helping them integrate it into everyday practice to improve patient outcomes.
Kate holds dual appointments as an Associate Professor in the Department of Neuroscience at Monash University and as a Clinician Research Fellow at Bayside Health. Across these roles she supervises graduate research students and mentors clinician researchers. Her research spans both efficacy and implementation science, with a strong emphasis on collaborative, multidisciplinary approaches to rehabilitation.
As a Chief Investigator, she has secured over $5 million in competitive grant funding to support innovative research in stroke recovery and rehabilitation. She currently leads and contributes to several major research projects, including the PROMOTE trial (MRFF-funded), which aims to improve evidence uptake in stroke rehabilitation.
Kate has authored more than 40 peer-reviewed publications in leading journals such as Journal of Physiotherapy, Archives of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, and Disability and Rehabilitation. Her recent work includes a systematic review demonstrating the superiority of task-specific training over Bobath therapy for lower limb recovery, a feasibility study on telerehabilitation implementation during COVID-19, and research into the mismatch between stroke rehabilitation environments and patients’ home settings.
Through her research, teaching, and clinical engagement, Kate continues to shape stroke rehabilitation policy and practice across Australia.
