Biography

Dr Julian O’Shea is an award-winning designer, engineering and video storyteller.

His research and teaching interests are diverse and multi-disciplinary and include:

  • the creator economy and social media video;
  • short form educational and documentary video;
  • media and social entrepreneurship;
  • urban design and community outreach and engagement; and
  • social change.

He holds a Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) and a Master of Engineering Science in Project Management, a Master of Business Administration and a PhD in sustainable transport and outreach design.  was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship where he studied urban design and video engagement projects. 

He is a highly skilled communicator on transport topics including his successful YouTube, Instagram and TikTok channels (@julianoshea), and the popular series Unknown Melbourne where he explores design topics related to cities, which has received over 20 million views and saw him named the Australian YouTube Breakout Creator of the Year. He is a regular media commentator on road safety and transport topics appearing on The Project, ABC Melbourne Radio, 3AW, ABC News Breakfast and more.

Through his career he has worked as a social entrepreneur, in the international humanitarian sector, and higher education.

His work has seen him named the Professional Engineer of the Year (Vic); Young Australian on the Year (SA); a Westpac Social Change Fellow and a Sir Weary Dunlop Fellow at Asialink.
