Biography
I am Associate Professor at the Faculty of Information Technology, Monash University, in the Optimisation group of the Department of Data Science and AI. I am also Deputy Director of Research in the Department and affiliated with the Environmental Informatics Hub.
My research seeks to understand how self-interested agents — both machines and humans — can learn to coordinate their actions without a central planner. I use game theory, simulations, and AI to study cooperation and collective action across four areas:
- AI & Multi-agent Systems — Game theory and reinforcement learning for decentralised cooperation between artificial agents.
- Social Dynamics — How cooperation and social norms emerge and break down in human societies facing collective action problems.
- Game Theory — foundational questions in evolutionary game theory, strategy evolution in repeated games, equilibrium selection, and the role of learning.
- Science of Science — how the incentives shaping journals, peer review, and public communication affect the quality of science.
Monash teaching commitment
I teach FIT1061 (Introduction to Artificial Intelligence) and have previously taught FIT3139 (Computational Modelling and Simulation) and FIT1008 (Introduction to Computer Science) among other units.
University Service
I also have experience in Education leadership, having led course design and accreditation exercises across the Faculty of Information Technology.
