Biography

John graduated from Trinity College Dublin in 2010 with an Honours science degree, receiving the St Lukes’ Award and University Gold Medal for high achievement in radiation therapy.  He has worked as a clinical radiation therapist in Ireland, England and most recently Australia. He has worked across a variety of radiation therapy departments, from established large metropolitan centres to new rural centres in both private and public settings. He progressed from Junior to Clinical Lead Radiation Therapist across an 8-year timeframe. 

John has always had a passion for excellence in patient care and is motivated by the critical role that radiation therapists play in the provision of radiation therapy services.  He believes in the ability of education coupled with clinical experience to enhance patient care. He completed a Master of Medical Imaging Science with a specialisation in hybrid imaging from The University of Sydney in 2018, during this period he also became a certified Clinical Medical Dosimetrist. This work led John to undertake a part-time PhD investigating “Functional Imaging Applications for Radiotherapy Planning in Patients with Glioblastoma’. 

John believes in the important role of professional advocacy to enhance patient care.  He is a member of many professional organisations but is most active on the ASMIRT Radiotherapy Reference Group and TROG CNS Working Party. He strives to enhance autonomy and professional recognition for medical radiation science professionals.  

John has worked in a full-time university teaching role since 2018.  He has taught undergraduate and postgraduate students studying medical radiation sciences.  John champions a blended teaching approach with a focus on practical experience. He has established entire new course units and adapted units to suit the dynamic needs of students, industry and the university. He enjoys seeing students’ progress.  

John has a keen interest in radiation safety and is the radiation safety officer for the Department of Medical Imaging and Radiation Sciences. Within this role, he has established new processes to enhance radiation safety for staff and students such as creating a personal dosimeter and radiation laboratory induction mobile phone app. 

John aims to facilitate the safe application of new technologies to improve the outcomes for patients with cancer through education, research and professional engagement and is always enthusiastic about making new professional connections.
