Biography

Dr Wichmann works in the School of Mathematical Sciences at Monash University as a Research Fellow. Prior to joining Monash University, he completed his PhD at the University of Bielefeld, Germany.

Research interests

Dr Wichmann is a Stochastic and Numerical Analyst who investigates Stochastic Partial Differential Equations (SPDEs). His main research interests involve
  • the theoretical understanding of SPDEs, including existence, uniqueness and regularity of solutions; and
  • the development and rigorous analysis of numerical algorithms for SPDEs, including stability, convergence and implementation of algorithms.
Partial Differential Equations appear in many applications, such as modeling of fluids, porous media and superconductors, and are typically derived from physical principles. In extreme cases (e.g. at very fast or small scales), additional features need to be considered: Randomness takes into account model uncertainties that arise, for example, from thermal fluctuations and measurement errors. This motivates the use of SPDEs to improve the model's accuracy. Dr Wichmann investigates these SPDEs qualitatively and quantitatively.
