Biography

Dr Joel Symons is a Specialist Anaesthetist and Head of Perioperative Medicine-International at The Alfred Hospital and Monash University in Melbourne. He is co-founder of the Monash Short Course and Master of Perioperative Medicine and has co-edited the book “Perioperative Medicine for the Junior Clinician” (Wiley).

Joel is on the International Board of Perioperative Medicine, a member of the executive of the Perioperative Medicine Special Interest Group and co-chair of the Perioperative Medicine Education Group at the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists.

Joel's research activities involve perioperative iron management and perioperative iron metabolism. He is on the steering committee for the ITACS trial and is conducting the HERROES trial investigating markers of iron deficiency in perioperative cardiac patients.
