Joanne O’Toole has over 25 years’ experience as a water microbiologist and consultant for government and private industry organisations. She has experience in laboratory management and accreditation and has represented government and water industry bodies on Australian Standards and other technical committees. She commenced her research career in 2004 at Monash University and was awarded her PhD in 2009. She works in the Infectious Diseases Epidemiology Unit of the Department of Epidemiology & Preventive Medicine Monash University, based at the Alfred Hospital She has published in the area of exposure assessment, recycled water and health risk assessment. She was awarded a 2010 National Water Commission Fellowship, a NHMRC Postgraduate Training Fellowship 2011-2014 and currently is working on a 3-year NHMRC funded project ‘Improving access to safe water using Riverbank Filtration’. Her most recent publications relate to the use of health based targets in water quality regulation, modelling of health risks associated with domestic greywater use and the quantification of exposure volumes associated during water using activities. Her current research interests comprise: exposure assessment, improving the integrity of microbiological water quality data, quantification of the burden of waterborne disease and the health impact of water supply and sanitation improvements. She is currently a member of the Australian Society of Microbiology; Australasian Epidemiological Association, the International Water Association and the NHMRC Water Quality Advisory Committee.
