Biography

Noongar/Nukunu Aboriginal Australian author and academic Jesse J. Fleay was a co-author of the Uluru Statement from the Heart in 2017. His work sits at the intersection of constitutional transformation, Indigenous justice, and democratic renewal. Jesse's scholarship spans political theory, constitutional studies, environmental governance, and Indigenous knowledge systems, with a particular focus on how legal and political institutions can be re-imagined beyond the limits of postimperial and postenlightenment thought and constitutional designs.

In 2024, Jesse co-hosted Global Citizen NOW: Melbourne alongside Charlie Puth, Hugh Jackman, Julia Gillard, Nooky, Ziggy Ramo, Sabrina Elba, and other fellow members of the international organisation, which is dedicated to ending extreme poverty. In 2025, Jesse was elected by a United Nations Indigenous caucus to co-author a landmark report, Indigenous Knowledge and Local Knowledge Dialogues Global Environment Outlook 7 (GEO-7) 2025 which included the Statement of Indigenous Peoples 2025.

At Monash University, Jesse contributes to teaching and research that encourages students to think creatively about power, justice, and the future of democratic life. Not only in Australia, but globally.

Beyond academia, Jesse maintains an active public profile as a commentator, essayist, and contributor to public policy debates and design. He has contributed to national debates on Indigenous rights, democratic reform, environmental stewardship, and the future of Australian governance through journalism, public speeches, and advisory roles.
