Professor Jan Coles is the past Director of Research and Graduate Studies for the School of Primary Health Care and actively involved in the development of researchers at a School and Department of General Practice level. She chairs the DGP research committee and has led initiatives such as the SHPC Brainteaser workshop series for early career researchers and the DGP writing group.
She is a leading family violence educator internationally and in the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences.
Her main area of research is gender based violence education, sexual violence and women's health and the impact of childhood sexual violence on early mothering.
She was an advisor to the World Health Organization pre-service gender based violence curriculum meeting in Geneva in 2015. She received the Dean's Award for Innovation in Teaching 2015 for her work in developing multi-professional e-learning package for improving the education of pre-service health practitioners in the area of gender based violence. This collaboration involved multiple disciplines and three partner universities. It is now open access http://pactsproject.org.au
She is engaged in national and international sexual violence research collaborations. Jan's current national and international work includes collaboration with the Australian Longitudinal Study of Womens Health and with the Sexual Violence Research Initiative in South Africa. She gave the closing address at the 2011 International Sexual Violence Research Forum, and has moderated an international discussion board and run researcher trauma prevention workshops in South Africa by invitation. Other areas of research interest include occupational violence and medical education.
