Dr Jack Nguyen, BPsych(Hons), PhD (Clinical Neuropsychology) is an Early Career Researcher in the School of Psychological Sciences and a Research Fellow at the Monash-Epworth Rehabilitation Research Centre. He leads a theme of research focussed on improving the management of persisting post-concussion symptoms after mild traumatic brain injury. Dr Nguyen, also a clinical neuropsychology registrar practising community rehabilitation, works at the intersection of research and clinical practice. His dual roles as clinician and researcher enable his research to be grounded in clinical practice and ensures his research output is readily translatable to clinicians working with individuals with mild traumatic brain injury/concussion. His expertise spans clinical neuropsychology, acquired brain injury, rehabilitation, positive behaviour support interventions, and qualitative and single-case experimental design methodologies.
Along with his team at the Monash-Epworth Rehabilitation Research Centre, Neurological Rehabilitation Group, and Olympic Park Sports Medicine Centre, Dr Nguyen developed i-RECOveR (Interdisciplinary Rehabilitation for Concussion Recovery), a novel interdisciplinary intervention for persisting post-concussion symptoms after mild traumatic brain injury. The eight-week intervention comprises coordinated neuropsychology, physiotherapy, and medical treatments targeting concussion symptoms. In a pilot study led by Dr Nguyen, the i-RECOveR intervention was shown to be feasible to operate and associated with symptom reduction and goal attainment. He is currently leading the next phase of this project which involves a larger-scale clinical trial of the intervention to establish its efficacy as well as to understand predictors of treatment response. Other projects within this program of research include a pilot telehealth evaluation of the i-RECOveR intervention (i-RECOveR-TH).
In his early career, Dr Nguyen has published 10 peer-reviewed articles on mild traumatic brain injury and delivered over 10 conference presentations/seminars, many to an international audience. He actively contributes to the scientific community and participates in journal reviews.
