Biography

Helen Johnson is an artist and writer.

 

Selected solo exhibitions include Barron Field as part of the Glasgow International, 2016; Slow Learners at Chateau Shatto, Los Angeles, 2015; The body is through at Laurel Gitlen, New York, 2015; Cafe Fatigue at Sutton Gallery, Melbourne, 2015; Ex-execs at Minerva, Sydney, 2014; and Time Enough for Love at Chatper House Lane, Melbourne, 2013.

 

Selected group exhibitions include Painting. More Painting at the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art, Melbourne, 2016; TarraWarra Biennial: Endless Circulation at the TarraWarra Museum of Art, Victoria, 2016; Pleasure and Reality at the National Gallery of Victoria, 2015; In my absence at Galerie Jocelyn Wolff, Paris, 2015; June: A Painting Show at Sadie Coles, London, 2015; Care at Interstate Projects, New York, 2015; Just Paintings (in collaboration with George Egerton Warburton and Hamishi Farah) at Westspace, Melbourne, 2014; Air to Surface (with Parker Ito) - Prism, Los Angeles, 2013; and Mural Problem at Otras Obras, Tijuana, 2013.

 

Helen completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts at RMIT in 2002 and a PhD in Fine Art at Monash University in 2014.  Her PhD thesis was published in 2015 by 3Ply books under the title Painting is a Critical Form.
