Biography
Gina is an education focussed academic. She holds an LLB and a master’s degree in Fundamental Rights and Constitutional Law Practice from the University of Pretoria (South Africa), a second master’s in International Human Rights Law from the University of Notre Dame (USA), and a PhD from the University of London (UK).
Gina has held academic appointments in Australia, Egypt, South Africa, and the United Kingdom. A passionate and experienced educator, she especially enjoys teaching foundational law units and supporting students at the early stages of their legal education. She also serves as the Clinical Supervisor for the Castan Centre Human Rights Clinic, where she guides students through practical, real-world human rights advocacy and legal work. Her commitment to student learning has been recognised through several awards, including the RMIT Vice-Chancellor’s Citation for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning (2024), the Faculty of Law, Monash University Teaching Award (2020) for her work in the Modern Slavery Clinic, and the Faculty of Law Teaching Citation (2020) for achieving the highest student satisfaction score in the in-house clinical placement unit (LAW4811).
Gina’s research interests are broadly situated within the field of human rights law, with a particular focus on the African human rights system. She has held roles in the NGO sector, including as Senior Researcher at the Centre for Human Rights (University of Pretoria) and Senior Legal Officer at the Refugee Legal Aid Project (Egyptian Organization for Human Rights). She has also worked as a consultant for the South African Human Rights Commission and the United Nations Development Programme in Egypt.
