George Athanasopoulos is Professor and Head of the Department of Econometrics and Business Statistics at Monash University. He is internationally recognised for his contributions to forecasting, time series analysis, and applied econometrics. George is co-author of the widely adopted and freely accessible textbook Forecasting: Principles and Practice (https://otexts.com/fpp3/) (with Professor Rob J Hyndman), now in its third edition and recently released in a Python version.

The book has become one of the most influential forecasting texts globally, with over 10,000 citations and more than 50 million pageviews across 6.5 million users from 209 countries. It is used by over 2,100 instructors in universities and organisations worldwide and supports teaching with associated software packages downloaded over 2 million times since 2018. Its practical, data-driven approach has set the benchmark for forecasting education and training, with translations available in ChineseKoreanJapaneseGreekItalianPortuguese, and Russian, and more underway.

George is a leading authority on hierarchical and grouped time series forecasting, having pioneered methods for forecast reconciliation and cross-temporal coherence. His work in this area has shaped the practice of forecasting in contexts ranging from national statistics offices to energy markets and public health. He co-edited a special issue on hierarchical forecasting in the International Journal of Forecasting and continues to lead research funded by the Australian Research Council on this topic.

He is a Director and Past President of the International Institute of Forecasters and has played a pivotal role in advancing the field through leadership, editorial responsibilities, and international collaborations. George has published extensively in top-tier journals and received numerous awards for both research and teaching, including national recognition for outstanding contributions to student learning.
