Biography

Dr Estelle Wallingford is a Lecturer and legal academic in the Department of Business Law and Taxation at the Monash Business School, where she serves as the Department's Deputy Director of Education. Her research examines the legal implications of emerging technologies with a particular focus on artificial intelligence ('AI') and related technologies.

Expanding on her doctoral research, Estelle's forthcoming monograph, 'Liabilities and Modern Artificial Intelligence: A Tri-Phase Model', is under contract with Routledge. The work offers an innovative and original 'Tri-Phase AI Liability Model' for assigning private law liability in an AI context. It also considers how this framework could complement regulatory approaches to artificial intelligence governance.

Research

Along with the intersection of law and artificial intelligence, Estelle investigates legal issues concerning technology more broadly. She explores challenges relating to the metaverse, digital twins, data, and privacy. Through this work, she develops dynamic and innovative solutions to legal problems posed by these forms of technologies.

Teaching

Through her teaching commitments, Estelle fosters intellectual curiosity. Within the Business School, she delivers undergraduate business law units together with technology law units. She pioneers the inclusion of AI in her teaching and assessment practices, encouraging students to navigate these technologies responsibly while understanding their legal and ethical implications.

Industry

Previously, Estelle developed her legal expertise by practising as an admitted Australian Lawyer in a multinational corporate law firm. She gained experience while working on large financial regulatory cases including the 2018 Australian Royal Commission into Misconduct in the Banking, Superannuation and Financial Services Industry. She also worked to represent clients in complex bankruptcy, insolvency, and litigation cases.
