Biography
Dr Hutton is a specialist neurologist with an interest in headache, neuropathic pain, peripheral nerve disease and general neurology. Her ongoing research focuses on the role of immune modification in chronic pain and using neurophysiological measures of small fibre function in neuropathic pain to guide therapy.
Dr Hutton completed her undergraduate training at The University of Tasmania, obtaining her MBBS in 2000. She undertook specialist training in Neurology at The Alfred Hospital and Monash Medical Centre before being awarded the Australian and New Zealand Association of Neurologists Fellowship at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery (NHNN), London. She was admitted as a Fellow of the Australasian College of Physicians in 2008 and was awarded her PhD from University College London in 2017.
Following a 6-month Fellowship in Headache at NHNN, she joined the MRC Centre for Neuromuscular Diseases, University College London for 4 years, where she was involved in therapeutic trials in genetic neuropathy, published on management of inflammatory neuropathy, and conducted research in neurobiological mechanisms in hereditary and acquired neuropathy and neuropathic pain.
Dr Hutton returned to Melbourne in 2012 and is Head of the Headache and Neuromuscular Services at Alfred Health, as well as co-director of Post Graduate Neurology Training. She is also the Head of the Peripheral Neuropathy, Pain and Headache Group at the Department of Neurosciences, Monash University. Dr Hutton is actively involved in several clinical trials to expand therapeutic options for patients suffering from headache, neuromuscular diseases and pain. She has ongoing research interests in the role of immune modification in chronic pain, improving understanding of clinical, biochemical and neurophysiological aspects of pain and headache to guide therapy. She is also engaged in several international collaborative projects to better understand patterns of disease and response to therapy in immune-mediated neuropathies.
Dr Hutton has been awarded several prizes and fellowships, including the European Federation of IASP Chapters (EFIC) – Grünenthal Grant, the BMA Vera Down Fellowship, and The Ipsen Fund Research Fellowship. She has been an invited speaker at the Australian Association of Neurologists ASM, the inaugural Australian and New Zealand Headache Society/International Headache Society Masterclass, the British Neuropathological Society, AIM Pain Symposium and several local training meetings.
She is a member of several international societies, including the Australian Association of Neurologists (ANZAN), Australian and New Zealand Headache Society (ANZHS, Chair, Therapeutics subcommittee and Vic/Tas representative on Council), The American Association of Neurologists (AAN), the International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP), IASP Neuropathic Pain Special Interest Group (NeuPSIG), and the Peripheral Nerve Society (PNS), including membership of the Inflammatory Neuropathy Consortium (INC) and Vasculitic Neuropathy SIG.
