Biography

Carrer Summary: Dr. Mehta is a an Early Career Researcher and a Founding Member of Augmented Intelligence and Multimodal Analytics (AIM) for Health Lab at Faculty of IT at Monash University. He has successfully developed machine learning and deep learning models for various medical applications, leading to their implementation in practice. His portfolio includes an award-finalist AI software for skin lesion analysis with Molemap Pty. Ltd., privacy-preserved video-based analysis of epilepsy seizures at Alfred Hospital, and real-time diagnostics of retinal diseases using fundus images with Optain Health. Prior to joining Monash University, Dr. Mehta held positions at renowned industry research labs, including Toshiba R&D Center in Japan, Panasonic R&D Center in Singapore, and IBM Research Labs in Australia.

Research Interests: Dr. Mehta leads interdisciplinary research at the intersection of artificial intelligence, LLM/AI Agents, computer-aided diagnosis and disease management, digital health, and co-design. His work harnesses advanced artificial intelligence technologies to analyze large-scale, multi-modality medical data, including imaging, biomedical signals, medical records, genomics, and reports. His research models clinicians' expertise for tasks such as diagnosis and disease management, focusing on conditions related to ophthalmology, dermatology, and neurodegenerative diseases like epilepsy, Parkinson's, and multiple sclerosis. Importantly, he designs these solutions in close collaboration with the clinicians and the affected health community and organisations.

Research Track Record Dr. Mehta's work has been published in leading computer vision and machine learning venues such as Pattern Recognition, TMLR, CVPR, Machine Learning, as well as top-tier NLP venues such as ACL. Additionally, it has also been featured in top-tier medical AI conferences such as MICCAI, MIDL, IPMI, and translated as clinical studies in clinical journals such as the Journal of the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology and Epilepsia. His notable contributions include AI tools for skin lesion diagnosis, seizure monitoring and detection, and anti-seizure drug recommendation for epilepsy patients. These works contribute to both advancing AI research and informing the clinical community on the practical application of medical AI to address key translational challenges.

Prizes & Awards: Dr. Mehta’s research and translation has attracted several international and nation prizes and fellowship awards including Top 3 Finalist for the Morgan Mansell Prize (Victorian Young Melanoma Researcher) 2023; One of the top 200 computer science researchers across the world to attend the 10th Heidelberg Laureate Forum (HLF), 2023; The sole recipient of the travel grant to the 10th HLF from Australian Academy of Science (AAS), 2023; One of the 50 TOSHIBA Global Fellow all over the world by the TOSHIBA R&D in Japan, 2018; One of the 90 undergraduate students (out of ~ 1 million) for the DAAD-WISE German Academic Exchange Working Internship in Science and Engineering Fellowship, 2013 at Technical University of Munich (TUM).

Industry Involvement: Dr. Mehta serves as a consultant Research Scientist at Optain Health, a company that has garnered over 20 million USD in funding and targets the expansive global optometry and optical dispensing market. At Optain Health, he focuses on developing advanced AI algorithms for diagnosing and managing rare ocular diseases using retinal fundus images. In collaboration with Molemap Pty. Ltd., Dr. Mehta has created an AI system for skin lesion analysis, which was recognized as a top 3 finalist for the Morgan Mansell Prize in 2023. He also collaborates closely with Seer Medical, where he contributes to the development of video-based AI technologies for the automated detection and monitoring of seizures in epilepsy patients outside of hospital settings. Dr. Mehta's extensive industry experience also includes roles at prestigious industry research labs such as Panasonic R&D Center in Singapore, IBM Research Labs in Australia, and Toshiba R&D Center in Japan.
