Dr Daniel Fehring is a Research Fellow and Neurostimulation Lead in the Addiction and Impulsivity Research Lab at the Turner Institute for Brain and Mental Health, and a Theme Leader at the Monash Addiction Research Centre. His research focuses on developing personalised, brain-based interventions for addiction and related disorders through advanced neuromodulation and neuroimaging approaches.
Daniel’s work integrates personalised neuromodulation, including deep transcranial magnetic stimulation (dTMS) and transcranial focused ultrasound (tFUS), to identify and recalibrate disrupted neural circuits involved in executive control and decision-making, and their implications for substance and behavioural addictions. His research program spans from basic neuroscience, where he proposed the first evidence-based framework for brain stimulation effects, to clinical, through the application of rapid, personalised neurostimulation interventions in clinical populations.
He contributes to several national and international projects, including clinical trials in the alcohol and eating disorder space, and collaborative studies with the RIKEN Center for Brain Science in Japan. His publications appear in leading journals such as Brain, and his work has reached global audiences through extensive media coverage. Daniel holds a PhD in Cognitive Neuroscience from Monash University and has been recognised for his leadership and translational research through awards including the Monash Biomedicine Discovery Institute Rising Star.
In 2015, UN member states agreed to 17 global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure prosperity for all. This person’s work contributes towards the following SDG(s):
