Biography

Claire Spivakovsky is a Senior Lecturer in Criminology. Prior to joining Monash, Claire worked in the community and government sectors, developing a range of social and criminal justice projects which advocated for the rights and needs of marginalized populations.

Claire’s research explores how experiences of ‘difference’ are co-constructed by civil and criminal justice. She considers how localised notions of being ‘different’ – for example being racialised or living with a disability – are fundamental to the formation and orientation of both civil and criminal justice, and how civil and criminal justice tools, technologies and logics propagate specific notions of being ‘different’ for individuals to embody. Claire’s first book in this area,Racialized Correctional Governance: The Mutual Constructions of Race and Criminal Justice was published in April 2013 as part of Ashgate’s Advances in Criminology Series.
