Chathura completed a Bachelor of Science (honours) degree at The University of Peradeniya in Sri Lanka in 2013, and then moved to Australia in 2014, where he completed Master of Chemical Science degree at La Trobe University in 2016. He was awarded his PhD, entitled “Biochemical and Biophysical Characterization of Poxvirus Mediated Subversion of Apoptosis”, in 2020 from La Trobe University. He spent 8 months working as a Research Fellow in Prof. Marc Kvansakul’s laboratory La Trobe University where he investigated the structure and function of poxvirus replication associated DNA binding proteins.
Chathura moved to Monash University in 2021 and working as a Research Fellow in Associate Professor Sheena McGowan laboratory at the department of Microbiology. Chathura’s program of research is to examine the role of phage endolysins, characterization and engineering them to use as a therapeutic target against antibiotic resistant bacteria.
