Biography
Brett Hutchins is Professor of Media and Communications in the School of Media, Film & Journalism in the Faculty of Arts.
His research and teaching specialises in the following areas:
- Sports media and communications
- Environmental media and communications
- Digital and mobile media
- News media and journalism
- Social and media theory

He is a former Australian Research Council Future Fellow, and also serves on the editorial board of the following international journals: Journal of Communication (the flagship journal of the International Communication Association), Communication & Sport, Environmental Communication, Journal of Sport & Social Issues and Media International Australia.
Academic Leadership
In addition to being a widely published and cited scholar, Brett is an experienced academic leader who has served successfully in a range of roles, including Deputy Dean (Research) in the Faculty of Arts (2022–2025) and Head of the School of Media, Film & Journalism (2019–2021).
His work across all areas is driven by advocacy for the transformative power of the Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences (HASS) in creating healthy civil societies, informed citizens, and high-performing professionals.
PhD and Masters-by-Research Supervision
Brett is available for Higher Degree Research supervision.
He supervises a number of PhD and Masters-by-Research projects and enjoys working with students from around the world. He has successfully supervised a wide range of projects, including those investigating sport media, mega-events, gender, digital news and journalism, political elections, environmental communication, and media entrepreneurialism.
