Biography
Brett Hutchins is Professor of Media and Communications and Deputy Dean (Research) in the Faculty of Arts.
He specialises in the following areas:
- Sports media and communications
- Environmental media
- Digital and mobile media
- News media and journalism

Research Focus and Publications
Brett’s research investigates who wins, who loses and how during processes of media, technological and environmental change. He uses a combination of critical analysis and evidence drawn from industry and policy circles to focus on questions of power and how it is exercised.
He has authored and edited several books and publishes regularly in leading international communications and media studies journals such as Media, Culture & Society, Digital Journalism, Convergence, International Journal of Communication and International Journal of Press/Politics.
Brett also sits on the editorial board of Journal of Communication (the flagship journal of the International Communication Association), Communication & Sport, Journal of Sport and Social Issues, Environmental Communication: A Journal of Nature & Culture and Media International Australia.
PhD and Masters-by-Research Supervision
Brett supervises PhD and Masters-by-Research projects and enjoys working with students from around the world. He has successfully supervised a range of projects over many years, including those investigating mobile communications, sport media, mediatised conflict, environmental communication, emergency risk communication, media entrepreneurialism and digital journalism.
Podcast Series and Media Commentary
Brett hosts the Media Sport Podcast Series. Available on Apple Podcasts/iTunes, Spotify and Soundcloud, the Series features interviews on sport, media and politics with researchers from around the world, as well as the growing role of sport in the popular communication of environmental issues and concerns.
He is also an active media commentator. He writes opinion pieces for outlets such as The Conversation, Inside Story and The Age, as well as receiving regular invitations from national and international news media to offer research-related insights into contemporary issues and stories.
