Biography

Dr Bradley Gardiner MBBS, FRACP, PhD is an Infectious Diseases Physician and clinical researcher at Alfred Health/Monash University in Melbourne, Australia passionate about the prevention, early diagnosis and optimal treatment of infections in immunocompromised patients. He finished his clinical training in 2013 and has conducted research in this area since, including a range of retrospective and prospective clinical studies. He completed his PhD 17/02/2022 which focused on individualizing cytomegalovirus preventative strategies in solid organ transplant recipients and involved close collaborations with the Alfred Lung Transplant team. Prior to this, he was in Boston (2014-2017) for a clinical/research fellowship at Tufts Medical Center. He has maintained an active clinical practice in ID throughout this time.

Dr Gardiner has received competitive fellowship and grant funding, totalling $509,087 to date, from the The Transplantation Society, Alfred Foundation, NHMRC Postgraduate Fellowship, Sir James McNeill Postgraduate Research Scholarship, Monash Graduate Excellence Scholarship & Faculty Postgraduate Excellence Award, Francis P. Tally MD Fellowship and Richard Kemp Memorial Fellowship.

With a H-index of 14 and i10-index of 16, his peer-reviewed published research has garnered almost 888 citations to date.  

Clinical activities

Dr Gardiner is a practicing Infectious Diseases Physician at Alfred Health focusing on immunocompromised patients particularly solid organ transplant recipients.

University Service

Dr Gardiner is an active clinical researcher focusing on infections in transplant recipients. He has conducted research within this theme since 2014 which has included a range of retrospective and prospective clinical studies. He recently completed my PhD which focused on individualizing cytomegalovirus (CMV) preventative strategies in solid organ transplant recipients.

Supervision interests

Since 2013, Dr Gardiner has supervised 22 individual students/trainees including 6 ID advanced trainees, 6 physician trainees, 4 medical students, 4 undergraduate students & 2 pharmacists. They have contributed to >16 projects resulting in >10 manuscriptions ranging from independent research studies, case reports, presentations to data collection as part of larger studies. Additionally, he has provided mentorship to doctors-in-training at various levels, particularly infectious diseases advanced trainees.

Dr Gardiner is currently accepting Honours and PhD students with topics open for discussion.
