Personal profile

Biography

Associate Prof. Edwards completed his PhD in respiratory physiology at Monash University in 2009. During this time he acquired considerable expertise in the area of respiratory control, with a particular focus on the understanding the mechanisms responsible for unstable breathing in newborn infants. During his PhD, he also held a part-time Medical Scientist position at the Monash Sleep Centre where he became skilled in performing clinical assessments and overnight monitoring of individuals with sleep disorders.

Following his PhD, Associate Prof.  Edwards was awarded two successive fellowship (2010-11; Thoracic Society of Australia and New Zealand Allen and Hanburys Respiratory Research Fellowship, 2012-16; NHMRC CJ Martin Fellowship) to pursue post-doctoral studies at Harvard Medical School (Boston, USA) focused on understanding the pathogenesis of obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA). During his postdoctoral studies at Harvard, he assisted in the development of the technique to 'endotype' the underlying causes of OSA

Associate Prof. Edwards returned to Monash University in 2015 where he is now the Head of the Sleep Disorders Research Program at Monash University and also serves as the Director of the Sleep and Circadian Rhythms Research Program within the School of Psychological Sciences.  His current research is dedicated to advancing the understanding of the pathophysiology of OSA, including the role of common risk factors such as obesity in the development of the disorder. By elucidating the underlying mechanisms of OSA, his work aims to inform and implement personalised treatment strategies that address the specific needs of individual patients.
