Personal profile

Biography

Professor Bijan Shirinzadeh attended Perth Modern School, Wesley College, and the university in Western Australia (WA).  After one and half years of his university studies in WA, he transferred to The University of Michigan, Ann Arbor (USA) to pursue studying a double degrees in Aerospace Engineering and Mechanical Engineering.  He was awarded his qualifications with BE (Aerospace), BE (Mechanical), MSE (Aerospace), and MSE (Mechanical) from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, USA.  He subsequently returned to Perth (WA) and continued his research studies and received his PhD in Mechanical Engineering (with research in Robotics/Mechatronics/Manufacturing Engineering) at the University of Western Australia. He was awarded a postdoc fellowship in the Department of Mechanical Engineering (UWA) for one year, and took up the position of Senior Research Scientist for four years at CSIRO, Division of Manufacturing Technology, Sydney, NSW.  He then joined the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, Monash University, where he has been a Professor of Mechanical, Aerospace and Mechatronics Engineering since 2011.  He is also the Director of Robotics & Mechatronics Research Laboratory, which he established in 1994.  At Monash University, he has held many departmental/faculty committee memberships including research, promotion, quality and education (including 6 years as the Director of Mechatronics Engineering).  He has held Associate Editorial positions at prestigious journals such as IEEE/ASME Trans. on Mechatronics, Journal of Robotics and Automation, and many others.  He is currently an EIC of Robotics Division in Sensors, and Associate Editor of Journal of Mechatronics.  He also holds Scientific/Steering Committee memberships of many international conferences including 3M-NANO, MARSS, ICMT, ASPEN, and many others.

Research interests

Professor Shirinzadeh's current research interests include micro/nano-positioning and manipulation mechanisms and systems (RMRL is the world premier research laboratory in this research area); intelligent sensing and control; complex dynamical systems (including AI/ML for modelling and analysis); robotics/mechatronics systems; composite manufacturing of aerospace structures (establishing Australia’s first and only open-architecture robotic fibre placement (RFP) research facility and programme); medical robotics and haptics (robotic-assisted minimally invasive cardiac surgery, cell surgery, endo-nasal surgery, robotic thermal ablation of cancer tumours); aerial vehicles (flight dynamics and sensing/control of UAVs, AAVs, and drones); autonomous systems planning/control and SLAM; and automation and manufacturing sciences. Prof. Shirinzadeh has published more than 550 peer-reviewed international journal/conference papers in the above research areas, has mentored/supervised more than 40+ postdocs, and has graduated in excess of 50+ PhDs and 200+ Honours students.  He is also the most highly cited teaching/research academic in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering.
