Biography

Bhiamie Williamson is a Euahlayi man from north-west New South Wales with familial ties to north-west Queensland. Bhiamie is a Senior Lecturer at Monash University. He leads the National Indigenous Disaster Resilience research program, the only Indigenous-led nationally focussed research program focussed on quantifying the experiences of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities before, during and after major environmental disasters.

Bhiamie’s PhD from the Australian National University investigated the changing nature of Indigenous men and masculinities in Australia. He has a Master’s qualification in Indigenous Governance from the University of Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. Bhiamie also holds graduate certificates in Indigenous Governance from the Native Nations Institute at the University of Arizona and Indigenous Trauma and Recovery Practice from the University of Wollongong. He completed his Undergraduate in environmental management and political science also from the Australian National University.

Bhiamie holds a range of positions including as Chair of Country Needs People, an environmental charity that advocates and provides practical support for Indigenous ranger groups. He is a Director of the Australian Indigenous Governance Institute, an Indigenous charity that supports Indigenous communities establish and maintain effective community governing groups and processes. He is also an Executive Member of Maiam nayri Wingara, the leading Indigenous group exploring and advocating for Indigenous Data Sovereignty through governance.
