Personal profile

Bernie Walsh is an Australian industrial designer who has specialised in transport design for over thirty years. He has been teaching manual and, more recently, digital concept sketching and design at university level for most of his life.

Over a 15 year period Bernie has worked at GM Holden, VARD, Bayley Design, Millard Design, International Harvester, Iveco, and as Chief Designer for Nissan Design Australia. He has an internationally recognised reputation in both design and illustration and started his own art and design company specialising in transport design that included both interior and exterior concept design, as well as production expertise in cars, trucks, trains, buses, yachts, planes and military vehicles.

Bernie's designs include the Transtar series of bonneted trucks for Internatinal Harvester, the Power Star series of trucks for Iveco and the S2S sports car for Orbital Engine Company as well as yachts and watercraft for Granger Design. Over a 12 year period, on a weekly basis, Bernie contributed automotive sketches to The AustralianMotor Sport MagazineCar Magazine, Brisbane Courier Mail, and The Times of India newspaper.

Bernie created a niche market in tutorials that demonstrated to university students and industry professionals how to use new technologies in drawing programs.  His blog is widely read and his many concept and speed sketching demos are viewed worldwide.  These sketching demos are picked up by many of the top websites specialising in automotive design and industrial design.

Bernie has taught at RMIT University, Monash University and Swinburne University, all based in Melbourne, Australia.  He has spent the last few years as the lead Creative Design Manager for two of the top design consultancies in Melbourne: Outerspace Design and then Cobalt Design Group, where he was the Lead Designer on a project that won a Premier Design Award in 2015.  He has also been lead designer for four other products that have won Australian Design Awards in 2015 and 2016 and recently was part of the design team that won the Mercedes Vito van design competition.

Bernie teaches at Southeast University, China, which is a joint venture with Monash University Australia. He is a Wacom Ambassador and an Autodesk Sketchbook pro Beta tester and specialist consultant to their user research design team in Shanghai China.

Bernie has run creative Concept sketching workshops in North America, Mexico, China and Australia.  His images have been selected for the inaugural Autodesk CAVE Conference artists' gallery, and he was selected to be a hero artist for the Deviant art and Sketchbook 'Sketch This' launch.

In his spare time, Bernies paints images of the Mornington Peninsula which have been made into prints and sold worldwide. Additionally, he is working on a series of concept vehicles called Nullarbor Racers for a book, and maybe a game. They can be viewed from time to time on his blog berniewalsh.blogspot which is called Drawon.  Inspired to create things that don't exist ... yet.
