Biography

Dr Averil Grieve is a senior lecturer in the Communication in Health Professions Education Unit (COHPE) at Monash University. She provides cultural and language support to students on placement in the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences. She trains academic staff and field educators in transcultural teaching practices, is an advisor for bilingual education and the teaching and learning of additional languages and provides external consultations and trainings for working in multicultural educational and professional settings. Averil has a PhD in Applied Linguistics from Melbourne University and a Masters of Cross-Cultural Communication from the University of Sydney. She is an Associate Editor of the Journal of Academic Language and Learning and TESOL in Context. 

Research interests

Dr Averil Grieve's current research interests are the acquisition of language in health professions education, transcultural teaching practices and scaffolded language learning of communication skills in tertiary curricula design. She is involved in a number of research projects, including understanding the training needs of clinical field educators of international students, analysing the learning experiences and needs of international students at Monash University, and exploring the possibiliites of embedding industry-linked communication skills into tertiary curricula.  Averil has also developed  inter-disciplinary workshops for training and supporting placement supervisors of international students.

Consulting

Averil provides extensive training for placement educators, academic teaching staff and supervisors of international students. This includes developing an in-depth understanding of inter-cultural communication, transcultural teaching methodologies, cultural differences in teacher-student relationships and second language acquisition trajectories. She also consults on issues pertaining to bilingual education., particular in the primary school setting.

Clinical activities

Averil provides extensive academic and professional language and cultural support to students on clinical and non-clinical placement in the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences. Key to this is the development of critical thinking and professional communication skills.
