Biography

Dr Azad is an early-career medical oncologist and translational researcher with a special interest in genitourinary malignancies.
After completing his medical oncology training and a PhD in cell biology in Melbourne, Dr Azad moved to the British Columbia (BC) Cancer Agency and Vancouver Prostate Centre, Canada for a 2-year fellowship under the supervision of Professor Kim Chi, an internationally renowned prostate cancer researcher.
At BC Cancer Agency, Dr Azad played a major role in the development of five investigator-initiated clinical trials, was actively involved in outcomes research, and led pioneering studies centred on genomic profiling of circulating cell-free DNA in advanced prostate cancer patients developing resistance to next-generation hormonal agents. The significance of Dr Azad's work with cell-free DNA was recognized by four highly prestigious Merit Awards from the American Society of Clinical Oncology and first author publications in Clinical Cancer Research and JAMA Oncology.
 
Dr Azad has a strong academic record including 64 publications, a patent, 11 oral presentations at national and international meetings, Poster Highlights Sessions at the 2014 and 2015 ASCO Annual Meeting, 22 competitive prizes and awards and over $4.5M in competitive funding.
 
In November 2015, Dr Azad commenced appointments at Monash University and Monash Health, where he is leading a clinical and translational prostate cancer research program. His ongoing research centres on circulating biomarker analysis in advanced prostate cancer patients (supported by an NHMRC Project Grant) and the predictive utility of non-coding RNA for BET inhibition in prostate cancer (supported by a Victorian Cancer Agency Translational Research Project Grant). He is also actively involved in clinical trials and notably is the lead Australian investigator for two clinical trials in advanced prostate cancer patients.
