Biography

A/Prof Antony Friedman is a specialist Gastroenterologist and Endoscopist. He has a broad range of interests in Gastroenterology, with a specific focus in inflammatory bowel disease, irritable bowel syndrome, functional gastrointestinal disorders and bowel cancer screening.

Antony studied medicine at Monash University and received his MBBS in 2004. He was admitted as a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians as a specialist Gastroenterologist in 2011, having trained at Monash Medical Centre, Box Hill, Frankston and The Alfred hospitals. In 2012, Antony completed an Intestinal Ultrasound Fellowship at the Ospedale Luigi Sacco, Milan, Italy. Antony received a postgraduate research degree in 2016 for work on inflammatory bowel disease. He is on staff at The Alfred hospital and Monash University  and a VMO Gastroenterologist.

Antony has made significant contributions to improving clinical and administrative practices in various Melbourne hospitals. His research has led to the elimination of faecal occult blood tests for inpatients at Eastern Health and the adoption of rapid iron infusion protocols at both Alfred Health and Peninsula Health. Antony established and is the Head of the Gastrointestinal Ultrasound Unit at The Alfred, Australia’s only dedicated gastrointestinal ultrasound service. He has secured external funding for several ultrasound machines at The Alfred hospital. Antony won the Alfred Health Innovation Award in 2018 for this work.
