Biography
Professor Annette Bos is Associate Dean (Sustainability and Society) in the Faculty of Science at Monash University and leads an organisational unit on Sustainable Development education. She is the director of the Master of Sustainability (Monash Indonesia) and the incoming director of the Master of Environment and Sustainability (Monash Australia). Prior to this, she was Deputy Director (Education) and Acting Director at Monash Sustainable Development Institute.
Annette is an interdisciplinary academic and educational entrepreneur driven to understand and influence sustainability transitions. She is particularly interested in the design and dynamics of trans- and interdisciplinary learning processes that aim to create transformative, systemic change toward sustainable futures.
As an educator, Annette works to develop the capacity of individuals and organisations to collaborate, influence and lead innovative responses to complex sustainable development challenges.
Originally trained as a civil (BEng) and water engineer (MSc), Annette previously worked in the water sector in Africa and Europe, where she became aware of the importance of the interplay among technical, social, and institutional matters needed to create change. This led to pursuing a PhD in Environmental Sociology, where she developed new socio-technical understandings of urban water governance.
Annette's more current work spans multiple sectors, including water, health, climate, and community resilience after bushfires. She was recently a Chief Investigator in Fire to Flourish, leading a group on 'connection and learning', and has also been exploring the impact and design of sustainability education. She has published on sustainability transitions, governance experimentation, social learning, transdisciplinary approaches, sustainable water management, knowledge translation, and sustainable development education.
Annette founded the thematic group on 'Education and Learning in Sustainability Transitions', part of the Sustainability Transitions Research Network.
At Monash, Annette has provided leadership for a wide range of research and education-related initiatives, including the establishment of the Sustainable Development Education program at Monash Sustainable Development Institute, the Master of Behaviour and Systemic Change, and the C21 Education Research Lab. She also built and led Graduate Research programs.
Throughout her career, Annette has worked closely with industry, government agencies and not-for-profit organisations, including, more recently, a strategic ideation process on climate change in the Victorian health sector.
