Biography

Associate Professor Annette Bos is Deputy Director (Education) at Monash Sustainable Development Institute (MSDI), one of the leading interdisciplinary research and education institutes for sustainable development that is driven to find real solutions to some of the most significant challenges facing our world today.

Annette has interests in developing the capacity of individuals and organisations to collaborate, influence and lead innovative responses to complex, inter-connected sustainable development challenges. She works to provide a range of diverse transformative educational experiences to equip people and organisations to be change-makers, locally and globally.

Annette leads the Sustainable Development Education program at MSDI. She also developed and currently coordinates the Leadership for Sustainable Development specialisation that is part of the Master of Environment and Sustainability at Monash University. She is also MSDI’s PhD Program Director and co-leads the Graduate Research Industry Program (GRIP) – Water and Sustainability in Asia.

Annette's research examines questions related to sustainable development and sustainability transitions in the water sector to improve human and environmental health. She has developed new socio-technical understandings of urban water governance. Her key research achievements include contributions on how to design social learning processes to advance sustainable policy and practices from a futures perspective. More recently, she has also been exploring the impact and design of sustainability education.

Prior to joining Monash University, Annette was involved in capacity development and consultancy related to water services management in Europe as well as Africa. Throughout her career, she has worked extensively with industry, government agencies and aid organisations.

Annette has an interdisciplinary background. She holds a PhD in Environmental Sociology (Monash University, Australia), an MSc in Water and Waste Engineering (Loughborough University, UK) and a BSc in Civil Engineering (HTS, The Netherlands).
