Personal profile

Dr McIntosh is a senior clinical research scientist at the Van Cleef Centre for Nervous Diseases, Monash University (The Alfred Hospital) and the Melbourne Brain Centre @ The Royal Melbourne Hospital and Austin Hospital. Her appointment is shared between these sites. Dr McIntosh’s research focus is long-term epilepsy outcomes, particularly seizure outcomes. Most people live with epilepsy for a significant proportion of their lifetime, yet outcome studies generally have quite limited timeframes. Dr McIntosh has built carefully characterised long-term patient cohorts in order to contribute to the understanding of epilepsy over the lifetime.  Her research includes studies of the impact of epilepsy on mortality and health, evolution of seizure outcomes over time, and risk factors for poor seizure control. Her work translates directly to clinical care, informing treatment guidelines, as well as contributing to the development of epilepsy research methodology and understanding of biological mechanisms of epilepsy.
