Andrew Stewardson is an Infectious Diseases Physician clinician-researcher, with joint appointment at Monash University and Bayside Health (Alfred Care Group) as Associate Professor (Research) and Director, Infection Prevention and Healthcare Epidemiology. He has two main areas of clinical and research interest. His primary focus is on the health-economic impact, transmission, and control of healthcare associated infections and antimicrobial resistance. He also has a strong interest in the prevention and management of infections among people who inject drugs.

Andrew has a strong track record in healthcare safety & quality improvement. He spent four years as research fellow at the Infection Control Program and WHO Collaborating Centre on Patient Safety, University of Geneva Hospitals (Switzerland), 2009-2014. He was an external consultant to the WHO Patient Safety program and coordinated the development of the WHO Hand Hygiene Self-Assessment Framework. He was National Project Manager at Hand Hygiene Australia, 2014-2017. He is Infection Prevention and Control theme co-lead for the DFAT-funded COMBAT-AMR project to build capacity in the Pacific.

Andrew's commitment to research translation is shown by previous and current participation in several state and national healthcare infection and patient safety committees, including the Healthcare Associated Infection Advisory Committee at the Australian Commission on Quality and Safety in Health Care and the Infection INSIGHT subcommittee at Safer Care Victoria. He is past Chair of the Healthcare Infection Control Special Interest Group within the Australasian Society for Infectious Diseases (ASID). Andrew was Editor-in-Chief of Antimicrobial Resistance and Infection Control, 2023-2025.
