Personal profile

Biography

I work mainly in the field of applied aesthetics. I am particularly interested in the connections between aesthetic concepts and theories of meaning. My current research program is a conceptual investigation of images and image theory. I am also in the early stages of a project looking at signalling protocols in nature, which uses an aesthetic approach for the study of animal patterns and colours. A number of representative recent publications can be found on my academia site: https://monash.academia.edu/AlisonRoss

I have supervised graduate projects in political philosophy and aesthetics, as well as in the critical theory tradition. A number of my former graduate students hold ongoing academic positions in Australia and abroad. One of my former Masters students has won the Vice-Chancellor's award for Masters Thesis Excellence (2008); and three of my former PhD students have won the Mollie Holman University medal for excellence in doctoral research (2009, 2017, 2020).

I am currently on secondment to the Australian Research Council where I am working as the Executive Director for the Humanities and Creative Arts (2023-2026). I will not be taking any new graduate students while I am on secondment.
