Biography

Alan Reid is a Professor in the Faculty of Education, Monash University.

Alan's research interests focus on educators' thinking and practice in environmental and sustainability education, and traditions, capacities and issues in associated theory, research and policy. 

Applications of this work include editing the 4 volume reference work series, Environmental Education (Routledge Major Works), entries to the Oxford Bibliography on Environmental Education, and working as editor-in-chief of Environmental Education Research.   

Examples of recent work include education research, policy and practice development activities that address the climate emergency through education; the UN's Sustainable Development Goals, e.g. Mission 4.7 on education for sustainable development and Challenge 6.1 on #generationrestoration; and scientists' warnings about the environmental crisis.  

Alan is also an associate editor of Journal of Curriculum Studies. He applies his broader interests to this area as illustrated in the collection, Curriculum and Environmental Education: Perspectives, Priorities and Challenges, and contributions to journals, textbooks and handbooks on related areas (e.g. geography education, marine education, science education, climate education).

Alan is an affiliate of the Monash Sustainable Development Institute, a member of the Monash Climate Change Communication Research Hub, and leads the Education, Environment and Sustainability Faculty Research Group.

He was the Faculty's Associate Dean - Education (2012-2017) and Associate Dean - Academic Strategy (2017-2022), and has served on Monash University's Academic Board (2022-2024).

Until 2012, he worked at the Centre for Research in Education and the Environment, University of Bath, where he completed his PhD in 1998. Alan is active in a range of environmental education research activities and networks, primarily in Europe, North America and Australasia. Most notably, these include the Global Environmental Education Partnership alongside a wide range of special interest groups, networks and events in the field, e.g. as an Honorary Professor at UCL's Institute of Education and Society, Curriculum, Pedagogy & Assessment and affiliate of its Centre for Climate Change and Sustainability Education; a member of the ECER Network in Research on Environmental and Sustainability Education; and a Scientific Committee member of the World Environmental Education Congress.

Alan's commitments and interests in teaching and graduate research supervision principally focus on environmental and sustainability education, and research approaches and professional inquiry in education.
