Biography

Dr Akshir is a lecturer in the Faculty of Education at Monash University, Clayton Campus, and  teaches in various units in the B. Ed., M. Ed. and the M. Teach programs. Before joining Monash, he took on a variety of roles in education. He was an editor of educational books with Marshall Cavendish, an English Language and English Literature teacher in various schools in Singapore and Australia, and staff professional developer who worked with hundreds of educators in Singapore, Bhutan, Russia and North Africa.

His research interests include educational policy and implementation; philsophy of education; curriculum,  pedagogy and assessment,  as well as critical (and creative) thinking. Critical thinking has indeed been experiencing an educational renaissance of sorts, as seen in various global educational policy reforms towards 21st century education which have been taking place since the turn of the millennium. And in an age where the normalisation of the absurd is taking root in a world of "alternative facts" and "fake news", one could argue that more critical thinkers are indeed what societies need. Now. The woes of our world are aggravated by ignorance, greed, extremism and vacousness which eschew truth, magnmamity, fairmindedness and criticality. 

Dr Akshir's current research interests in critical thinking centres around multidimensional perspectives. This  includes educatonal policy and implementation; philosophy of education; teacher knowledge and practices, curriculum, pedagogy and assessment, as well as student voice - all of which are arguably integral dimensions in the discourse of critical thinking in education that aims to prepare young people for the 21st century.
