Personal profile
Biography
I have more than 6 years of experience in stem cell techniques, including human pluripotent stem cell biology, neurodifferentiation protocols and disease modelling.
I started my PhD in Medical Biotechnology, Regenerative Medicine and Neuroscience (CIATEJ, AC) generating cellular models to study the genetic component of Parkinson's Disease. During the 3rd year, I was appointed a visitor PhD at the Parish-Thompson groups at The Florey Institute of Neuroscience and Mental Health. My position has required independently conducting project-driven research in the Neurogenesis and Neural Transplantation and Stem Cells and Neural Development Labs. I was appointed a Research Assistant position during the last year of my PhD that allowed me to graduate abroad finishing my degree with honours. After PhD completion, I joined the Galvagnion group –protein/membrane interactions in health and disease –at the University of Copenhagen as a postdoctoral fellow (2021-2023). Based on my previous expertise, I differentiated dopaminergic neurons (more vulnerable type) and cortical neurons (less vulnerable type) from human induced Pluripotent Stem Cells (hiPSCs) to evaluate the proteome and lipidome profile that will help to explain the selective vulnerability paradigm of dopaminergic neurons to alpha-synuclein in the context of Parkinson´s Disease in vitro and in post-mortem human brain tissue. Recently I joined the Translational Molecular Psychiatry, School of Clinical Sciences, Monash University under the lead of Professor Suresh Sundram, where I am establishing the first human stem cell lab in the Psychiatry Department to understand the molecular basis of schizophrenia in human stem cell models.
In addition, I have been co-awarded funding from the Michael J Fox Foundation for iPSC work and stipends to attend and present at the most prestigious European schools for Stem Cell research including the HYDRA Summer School, in Greece (2022) and the first Brain organoid CAJAL Advanced Neuroscience Training program, Bordeaux, France (2022).
