Biography

Dr. Arshad is an Associate Professor and Course Director (Master of Applied Engineering - MAppE) in the Mechanical Engineering Department, School of Engineering. Dr. Arshad is an accomplished academic and researcher specializing in clean and renewable energy, fuel and chemicals, microwave processing, and advanced materials for energy and health applications. His research focuses on renewable energy technologies, thermo-chemical reactor design, microwave processing, product analysis, energy efficiency, and sustainability.  With extensive expertise in developing bench-scale fluidized bed and microwave pyrolysis systems, Dr. Arshad has contributed significantly to pioneering work at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) and the University of New Brunswick (UNB), Canada. Currently, he is leading innovative projects, including the “Microwave Sterilization of Palm Fresh Fruits,” “Biomass Gasification for Syngas Production,” and “2D MXene Composite Materials for Energy Applications,” collaborating with industry partners and government agencies. Dr. Arshad is a prolific author, publishing extensively in high-impact journals and presenting at leading conferences. He is also deeply involved in computational modeling and simulation, particularly in COMSOL Multiphysics, advancing the understanding of biomass behavior. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Pune, India, a Master’s in Chemical Engineering, and a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia. Dr. Arshad further honed his expertise during his postdoctoral tenure at UNB, Canada. A dedicated educator, Dr. Arshad teaches courses such as Energy Efficiency and Sustainable Engineering, Sustainable Energy Technologies, and Industrial Ecology. He is passionate about mentoring undergraduate and graduate students through seminars, workshops, and specialized training programs. He also serves as a peer reviewer for several esteemed international journals.

For research collaborations, industrial partnerships, or information on graduate opportunities, Dr. Arshad welcomes inquiries. His commitment to advancing sustainable engineering solutions and training the next generation of researchers underscores his impactful academic journey.

Research interests

My primary research ambition is to lead in clean energy relevant research that will have a positive impact on the social and environment so as to result in an improved quality of life both now and in the generations to come. The key is through developing energy efficient technologies and using renewable source of energy, in a way that is relevant to current policies. The goal is to develop new system and ways to produce clean energy, fuels and chemicals through a combination of i) renewable sources (biomass, solar or wind), ii) technologies (microwave, thermo-chemical process, etc.), and iii) optimal model predictions (simulations, machine learning and artificial intelligence) with observations through data assimilation. This area of research will gain wide spread interest in the coming years.

Supervision interests

FOUR Ph.D. and TWO Master's students graduated under my main supervision. TWO other Ph.D. students are ongoing under my supervision, and ONE Ph.D., as associate supervisor.

Besides this, I have supervised FIVE Master's mini and industrial-based projects and am currently supervising FOUR Master industrial-based projects.

Please do not hesitate to contact me if you are interested in pursuing Master or PhD
