What’s natural in natural disasters?

Press/Media: Expert Comment

Description

The article demystifies the 'naturalness' of natural disasters. I posit that it is the climate literacy of ordinary folk in the two case studies - the Philippines and Malaysia - who heeded “both the cry of the earth and the cry of the poor” (quoted from the Pope’s green encyclical, Laudato Si’), in reaching out to those made more vulnerable by the indifference of those in power and governance. Fundamentally, social justice is inextricably linked with climate justice. Cognizance of this does not come naturally and soon enough to our leaders.
