DescriptionIn this essay I compare models of patriarchal masculinity in politics in Latin America and Australia. In contrast to strongmen figures such as Trujillo in the Dominican Republic, I argue, Australia's version of patriarchal power is the 'daggy dad' - a banal and intentionally non-threatening archetype of masculine authority. However, just as biographic sensationalism around strongmen dictators can overlook authoritarianism as a system, the daggy dad archetype masks sinister and systemic threats to our democracy in Australia.
