PNG says Manus Island is no longer a detention centre’, ABC Radio National (RN Drive), 12 May 2016

Press/Media: Expert Comment

Description

This discusses the legal implications of the decisions by the Papua New Guinea's immigration authority to ease restrictions at the Manus Island detention centre, so that the nearly-900 men there are, supposedly, no longer being detained.

According to the PNG government, the changes satisfy last month's ruling by the country's Supreme Court, which led Prime Minister Peter O'Neill to declare that the centre would be shut down.

My contribution gave an opinion about the legality of the actions by the PNG's government (whether this complies with the ruling of the PNG Supreme Court in April) and what this means for the future of the Manus Island centre.
