New drug could save lives of women in childbirth

A new clinical trial of an inhalable version of the drug Oxytocin could transform the way we handle childbirth and maternal health. The drug currently has to be refrigerated and injected by a medical professional. The researchers say it would be in a powder form and wouldn't have to be refrigerated, making it more accessible to women in developing countries. Lead researcher Michelle McIntosh from the Monash Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences has developed the first human trial of the drug that could prevent thousands of women from dying in childbirth.
