DescriptionInterview with Dr. Charles Livingstone, Head of Gambling and Social Determinants at Monash University, who will be leading a talk on a person's choice to gamble. He explains that the problem lies in the addiction of gambling, most commonly presented by the poker machine. As the pull of the poker machines is a great one, he says that it is time that they get together to have a serious discussion about this phenomenon. This is also backed by science, as studies show evidence of the addictive effects of the machines on the brain. Although the sports and political worlds are large supporters of gambling, Livingstone says that the health and societal effects should far outweigh their side on the issue. Like the way smoking was outlawed, he hopes the same can be done for the poker machines and other forms of repetitive gambling. His talk will be titled, Hooked on Gambling: By Choice or by Design?
