    DescriptionThe former leader of Spain's Catalonia region has been detained in Germany and could face extradition back to Spain where he fled five months ago after declaring independence from Madrid. The Spanish Supreme Court Friday ruled 25 Catalan leaders face trial for rebellion, embezzlement and disobeying the state. It also issued international arrest warrants for Puigdemont and four other politicians who have been in self-imposed exile in Belgium and Scotland.
    Last October's independence declaration prompted the central government to impose direct rule on Catalonia. December elections resulted in pro-independence parties maintaining a slim majority in the regional parliament. They are trying to elect a new leader. They have until May 22nd before new regional elections are called.
    Senior lecturer Carlos Uxo of Monash University in Australia told VOA's Victor Beattie Puigdemont was apparently given bad advice when he embarked on his latest European trip that included stops in Finland and Denmark:
