ASME National President's Report:
Fading Notes: The State of Music Education for the next generation of primary teachers. Whilst those working in the tertiary sector know all too well the current limited teacher experiences that occurs in music/arts, this report clearly outlines the minimal training our initial teacher education providers portion to the arts across the Australian initial teacher education sector. Their emphatic conclusion is that we are leaving emerging cohorts of primary teachers seriously unprepared to meet the expectations of an Australian Curriculum that mandates a quality music education…
Amidst this current situation, our ASME chapters are working hard to support early career teachers in both the Primary and Secondary sectors, in helping them provide a quality music education. In support of this, Professor Jane Southcott and colleague Associate Professor Renée Crawford from Monash University have collaborated with the ABC as music education consultants in the creation of four short programs that respond to the Australian Curriculum F-2 in Arts/Science, but also provide insights for teachers to devising extended approaches to music participation, engagement, and creation.
