DescriptionResearcher Australian Monash University in Melbroune biochemist Naveen Vankadari published a detailed mechanism of interaction between the molecule umifenovir (Arbidol) and structures on the surface of the virus SARS-CoV-2.

structural Studies and molecular dynamics showed that Arbidol interacts with the S (spike) glycoprotein of SARS-CoV-2 and prevents its structural changes, which are a key step for the attachment and Association of the virus with the human cell. Arbidol interacts with the S-protein through hydrogen and van der Waals linkages, altering its structure and inhibiting the functional activity. Thus, the mechanism of action of Arbidol has already been described for the influenza virus, which shows structural similarity in the binding areas of hemagglutinin (a surface protein of influenza virus) and S-protein of coronaviruses, therefore, Arbidol active against infections of SARS-CoV-2.

the Work is published in top journal International journal of Antimicrobial Agents (Q1).
