    This article challenges the widely held perception that Melbourne is the sporting capital of the world. the article contends that this is just marketing spin, used to justify the spending of public monies on grand sporting designs and major events. Unlike cities with better credentials, Melbourne does not house a globally recognisable sporting team or franchise. However, the city does the business of sport better than many.
