    The end of Karmichael Hunt's AFL career raised questions among the football media on the financial waste involved in recruiting code-hopper players. Hunt, a former rugby union international and league player, played AFL with the Gold Coast Suns, and was used to draw support to rules in a rugby state. The articles argues that given the competitive nature of the Australian football market, these initiatives are essential in building a supporter base in regions in which the AFL has little influence.
