Sperm Separation Apparatus and Methods

Abstract: apparatus and methods for sperm separation. The present invention relates to various embodiments of sperm separation methods and apparatus, including an apparatus having an inlet and discharge reservoir, and further: (i) a radial array of microchannels disposed between the inlet and discharge reservoirs. to provide fluid communication between them and to direct the mobile sperm inwardly from the inlet reservoir to the discharge reservoir; or ii) at least one microchannel path arranged between the inlet and discharge reservoirs to provide fluid communication therebetween, the at least one microchannel path having a path inlet adjacent to the inlet reservoir, an adjacent path outlet to the discharge reservoir, and a junction located between the path inlet and the path outlet to direct a portion of the sperm that enters the path inlet towards the discharge reservoir based on the sperm swimming wall behavior. Methods include filling a device with buffer liquid by introducing semen into an inlet reservoir and recovering sperm separated from the semen from the discharge reservoir.
